Location!

Hey! Today I spent the whole day in Miami Beach. I found lots of cool areas that could work if I find the right idea to shoot them in. Miami has lots of areas such as the beach itself, a pier, rocks, Wynwood, or Miami Design District.

This picture I took is an area after the beach next to the pier. There are several rocks around the edge which could be used. Although now that I put the idea together, I don't think the rocks will work in my case.
Here is the Miami Design District. There are several areas of walls of architecture that are unique and sophisticated. They are also simple and stylish to highlight the clothes well. If I don't take pictures at the photographer's house, then Miami is for sure the way to go!

Changes

Hey! So this week I've really been thinking about the progress I should be having. Next week is spring break, which will make it easy to complete everything! I haven't been giving my all this week as I have been having dance rehearsals after school till and getting home around 11pm. I put together some time frames for different tasks I need to complete.

  • Table of Contents: complete by the end of this week
  • All pictures: complete during spring break (find locations besides photographer's house this week)
  • Plan out two page spread and layout of magazine: this weekend
It has been hard finding time, but this weekend I plan on having everything planned out and ready to go!

Meeting with photographer

Hello! So today I went to my friend who is a photographer's house. We picked out a bunch of floaties to use for our summer shoot. Her pool is huge! It definitely gonna be easy to take summer pictures in her backyard. I think they would be cool for the two page spread or ad. They for sure add color and a summer vibe to the pictures. I have lots of ideas still in mind that need to be put to work. I feel as if I procrastinated these last weeks trying to think of the perfect idea. It is definitely time to put some confidence together and start with the photoshoot. Once the pictures are in, everything will come together much easier! Below are some examples of the floaties and how they can be used.

Group

Hello! So today in class we worked in groups to discuss our projects. It made me feel much better as everyone may have similar problems or are still needing ideas on what to do. From my group, I got ideas for my two-page spread that helped me a lot. Originally, I wanted to do a collage on different outfits and looks for the summer. But after talking it through, I realized that, that may not be the best option. I'm envisioning it as something very clean and simple, but I know it will take a lot of work to get it perfect. My group gave me the idea to have a picture on one page and the article on the other. Thinking this through, I know that this will come out looking much simpler than the collage because of how I can work with the design of it with my skills. I also got ideas on the colorings of my magazine. I've been only thinking of bright neon colors, when I could actually incorporate pastels and white. I want to have the neon colors pop out and make the magazine look very clean and mature with a girly touch. With these ideas, now I have to complete different tasks like the photoshoot. Once the photoshoot is completed and we have pictures,  think everything will finally come together much easier!

Shooting change

Hey! So with our planned shoot this weekend with a photographer I know letting me use her studio, there has been a change. She is not sure if she will be available to let us use her equipment, so now I need to plan out another photoshoot. I'm hoping that later throughout these weeks we may be able to use her studio to shoot the makeup and editorial looks. I wanted to complete those looks I her studio using the different papers. The photographer I know said we can use her studio soon, just not this weekend because of her jobs and work needed to be completed.

Planning out the different locations wasn't so bad. If we get to use her studio, I was thinking about doing different makeup looks very natural and golden with a pop of color (eyeliner, lips, etc.). I was thinking that whatever pop of color the look has, will be the background color in the studio. For example, gold simple eyeshadow with a bright blue under eyeliner. Then, the background will be the matching blue. For other locations to show off clothes, I was thinking around Miami Beach. Not all looks need to be literally on the beach, but just around the area. It gives a summery vibe and I think it will compliment the clothes well.

Here is one area on the beach to shoot in. There are more of these as well in different colors like blue and purple

Hey! Today I wanted to get an idea of the clothes I could use for my summer edition of our magazine. I started researching and looking through different magazines to get ideas and the vibe. Cosmopolitan and Seventeen magazine websites had a perfect section with all summer articles. This gave me different ideas to use:

  • swimsuits
  • variety of sunglasses
  • lots of white
  • jean shorts/jackets
  • rompers/dresses
  • shoulder shrug dresses/tops
I want to have different looks that could be used in various ways to different people. I like simplicity but my favorite item that I have seen throughout my research are the sunglasses. I think they make a statement to the outfit and will be appealing to my audience.

Planning

Hey! Like I said in my last post, the scheduled photoshoot is for this weekend. Today is Saturday, and tomorrow would've been the start of the photoshoot. Inconveniently, I got super sick this weekend and had to cancel tomorrows photoshoot. Today since I'm going to be home all day, I've been searching different looks and inspirations we could twist into our own for the magazine.

I researched different summer makeup looks, finding very natural glowy looks, or something with a pop of color (eyes or lips). Where our photoshoot is being taken, the woman is also a makeup artist. She has several makeup products that get sent to her that we could use to add cool colors in our looks. I think it would also be a good idea to review some products and have a "Must Haves" page.

This is one example of how a "Must Have" page can work. I think these pages relate to the reader and allow the reader to feel more attached to the magazine by giving a realistic approach!

Shooting

Hello readers! This weekend will be the photoshoot for our magazine. I feel like this will be a major start in the production of our magazine. A fashion photographer that I have shot with several times is allowing us to use her camera and studio. Her studio is in her house and consists of different paper backgrounds (blue, pink, white, black, brown, orange, yellow, green, and well basically every color!) and her backyard with a huge pool. I think the pool area could be very beneficial in creating the summer vibes. The paper backgrounds could be useful in showing off clothes and beauty.

Today, I read this article about Vogue magazine. It talks about the different techniques the magazine uses and ways they appeal to their audience. In the article a survey about magazine covers took place. This survey showed that Vogue's target audience is mainly appealed in buying the magazine by the qualities, such as lighting on the cover page. One survey participant said, “It is pretty obvious what you are doing here, I can tell which cover you want me to choose because it is clearly the most pleasing design.” The survey changed the cover page by showing variations of font, photo, layout, and color. Seeing how most participants chose the original image gives me a simple layout to follow. I like the close up image of the cover girl looking straight into the camera, simple font, layout spread out, and coordinating colors. All these together make the cover page look much more appealing.

Magazine Names

Welcome to week 2! Today in class, my partner and I researched different name ideas for our magazine. We want the name of our magazine to be unique and appealing to our target audience of young females. At first we looked through different magazines like Seventeen and Teen Vogue, thinking we would get name inspiration from there. We decided on researching names on makeup websites. We went to https://colourpop.com/ and looked through their products. We noticed that each eye shadow or lipstick color had a unique name to it. We picked a couple out and here's our list so far:

  • Chic-y (meaning elegant and stylish)
  • Koi (defined as various colorful cultivated forms of the common carp.)
  • Forte (meaning a strong point of someone or something someone excels at)
  • Bardot
  • Calypso
  • Lumiere (light in French)
  • Rever (meaning deep respect)
  • Touche (key in French)
  • Aura Voir ("will see" in French)

Research

Hello! After researching different elements of a cover page in my last post, today I wanted to research the different technical elements for inside my magazine.

I found this picture online showing how I can use subheadings, headlines, credits, etc. Researching all these elements made me realize that their is a lot more to include throughout my pages of the magazine. Now that I know where each technique and element is placed, I feel like it will help make my pages not complex and easier to read.

I found these two-page spreads during my research. I think something like this would be cool to incorporate in the magazine because of how intriguing it could be. This could be an idea for a two-page spread of mine, or maybe just inspiration as I can add a twist to it. We will see!

Research

Hello reader! In this post, I would like to discuss my inspirations and some ideas that will relate to my magazine. My partner and I have decided on completing summer editions for our magazine . I started researching different magazines of our topic in their summer edition.

See the source imageSee the source imageSee the source imageSee the source image

Looking at all these different covers, I have noticed a cover with a young girl having the "ideal" look. I have also noticed the different colors like yellow, blue, red, and pink. All these colors seem like a great tool to use giving off a summery feel. Looking at the main cover lines, they all use words such as "super", "hot", and "cool" in large letters. I feel like this attracts young girls as they have those expectations. I want my magazine to include some of these techniques but also have a realistic approach that everyone can relate to.

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog! My name is Sofia Wien and I am using this blog to show you my actions, thoughts, fails, and successes throughout my project. Here is where I will be posting and sharing all my ideas and steps that I' be taking in order to create a magazine for my AICE Media Studies Portfolio Project.

I want my magazine to be something I am passionate and interested in. I looked through different magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and Seventeen. I realized that the topics that reach my interest are those related to beauty and fashion. Being part of the modeling industry, I have been exposed to several photoshoots and jobs seeing how editors and directors plan their work. I am excited to see where I could go with this as there are so many options in this category. I want to make my magazine unique and relatable for my target audience. I have several ideas and thoughts in mind, so stay tuned!
